Local cyclist shares challenges of record-breaking heat in southern Arizona

TUCSON, Arizona (13 news) – The heat we’ve been seeing is making it difficult for southern Arizona residents to get out and train for things like The Tour of Tucson.

One local cyclist told 13 News he had to change his training regimen due to the heat.

“I basically go out after 6 o’clock and I’m riding and some nights I go out until 1 or 2 in the morning,” Damion Alexander said.

He said he has ridden his bike every day of the year so far and doesn’t let the heat stop him.

“I have over 1,000 hours and something like 10,000 miles on it, so you can ride no matter what’s going on and no matter the temperature,” he said.

He said he feels used to these temperatures now and most riders here should be, but it’s still important to listen to your body.

“We are all capable of doing much more than we think we can do, but it is also very important not to push ourselves,” he said. “We don’t want anyone to be a statistic.”

The Pima County Health Department said people should be careful if they bike, walk or even work. They add that Tucsonans are used to this heat even though it is already very late in the year.

“It’s easier for our bodies to deal with this since we’ve been dealing with it,” said Kat Davis with the Pima County Health Department. “In May, those first few days when it’s hot, our bodies aren’t used to it, so we tend to see more people get sick. So people are more acclimatized to the heat.”

Pima County said the magic number to look out for 13 news forecasts It’s the ’90s, which we may return to early next week.
