Rochelle community remembers Tyler Smith with annual 5K race

ROCHELLE, Ill. (WIFR) – A life taken too soon but never forgotten: That’s how the Rochelle community is remembering 23-year-old Tyler Smith at the Sixth Annual Memorial 5K in his honor Sunday morning.

Smith was a Rochelle native who was found dead more than two hours southwest of Rockford six years ago Sunday and Illinois State Police are searching for answers.

Tyler loved to run, so they created this 5K race to keep his memory alive. Proceeds benefit the Tyler Smith Memorial Foundation, which funds scholarships for local high schools and donates to area charities.

“It’s a tough day and it helps to have people around us who really care about Tyler and our family, and to know that we have that support is really amazing,” says Tyler’s mother, Sandra Halsne.
