Moore ruled out after freak injury; Fisch says it’s time to move on

Injured on a bizarre play in the season opener, University of Washington tight end Quentin Moore will not play in Saturday’s game against Eastern Michigan at Husky Stadium, coach Jedd Fisch confirmed Thursday.

Moore, a 6-foot-4, 257-pound senior, was hurt against Weber State when he caught a 14-yard pass in the second quarter of the 35-3 win and was taken down by Wildcats linebacker Garrett Beck, who inexplicably ran to the sideline to make the tackle.

Beck had apparently left the field and realized his team was down a man, so he came back out, lowered his head, and hit Moore in the knee from the blind side, leaving the player on the ground in great pain and unable to get off the field under his own power.

While much attention has been paid to the unusual and costly play, which the Big Ten said in a statement amounted to an illegal substitution, the Husky coach appeared to dismiss it while indicating his team had no recourse.

“There’s nothing to do, nothing to say,” Fisch said. “It’s unfortunate, for sure. I don’t recall ever seeing a play like that. Something like this has happened maybe once or twice over the years, without any real reaction. I’m disappointed that it happened, but we have to move on.”

However, Fisch said he saw the play almost immediately on a new tablet used on the sideline and knew exactly what happened. Before, he wouldn’t have seen it until he watched the game tape much later.

The coach previously said Moore’s injury would not be season-ending, but did not give a timetable for when the sixth-year player might return.

In Moore’s absence, the Huskies will turn to junior Keleki Latu, freshman Decker DeGraaf and senior Owen Coutts to play tight end against Eastern Michigan.

The 6-foot-7, 244-pound Latu is a transfer from Nevada and the younger brother of UW, UCLA and NFL standout defensive back Laiatu Latu. DeGraaf, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound newcomer, caught a 33-yard touchdown pass on his first college play against Weber State. Coutts made his collegiate debut in last Saturday’s game.
