The six university CEOs on the Kansas Board of Regents will receive raises of between 4% and 6%, said KBOR communications director Matt Keith.

The increases for each university’s CEOs were determined after performance evaluations were completed at the executive session of the regents meeting on June 18.

“I think we have a very high-performing group among our presidents and chancellor,” Regent Wint Winter said during the meeting before voting to approve the bill.

University of Kansas Chancellor Gets 6% Raise

KBOR approved a 6% raise for University of Kansas Chancellor Douglas Girod. For fiscal year 2024, his salary was $655,200. With the raise, his new salary will be $695,000.

Girod became KU’s 18th chancellor in 2017, after serving as executive vice chancellor of the KU Medical Center. He earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of California and his medical degree from the University of California. He completed his residency and completed an NIH research fellowship at the University of Washington.

On average, KU professors in 2024 earned $133,467, associate professors earned $96,017, assistant professors earned $88,784 and instructors earned $77,921. Girod’s 2024 salary is nearly five times the average professor’s salary and about seven times that of instructors.

The University of Kansas media relations department did not respond to a request for comment on the faculty pay increases.

Pittsburgh State University President Dan Shipp will receive a 6% pay increase for fiscal year 2025. His salary will jump from $286,000 to $304,000, taking him from being the lowest-paid university CEO to the second-lowest-paid in 2025.

Shipp became the university’s 10th president in 2022 after serving as vice chancellor for strategic initiatives and associate to the provost at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Shipp received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska Lincoln, his master’s degree from the University of Nebraska Omaha and his doctorate from the University of the Pacific.

Pitt State professors are earning an average of $82,582 a year for fiscal year 2024. Shipp currently makes nearly three and a half times more than the average professor. Associate professors make an average of $71,024 a year, assistant professors make an average of $59,847 a year and instructors make an average of $54,496 a year.

Teachers will receive a 2.39% pay increase for fiscal year 2025 and most staff eligible for benefits will receive a 2% raise, media relations director Andra Stefanoni said.

Hush became the university’s 18th president in 2022 after serving as the university’s interim president for one semester. He graduated from Emporia State in 1982 after majoring in business administration and marketing.

Emporia State professors earn an average of $73,559 per year through fiscal year 2024. Currently, Hush earns nearly four times more than the average professor. Associate professors earn an average of $67,848 per year, assistant professors earn an average of $63,762 per year, and instructors earn an average of $45,937 per year.

Emporia State Media Relations Director Gwendolynne Larson says there are currently no faculty raises in place.

“Emporia State University has invested in all of its employees’ salaries over the past three years to better align them with market compensation,” Larson said. “We will continue to invest in our employees, including faculty salaries.”

Linton became the 15th president of Kansas State University in 2022. Prior to that, he served as dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology, a master’s degree in food science, and a doctorate in food science, all three of which he earned from Virginia Tech University.

K-State professors earn an average of $128,508 per year through fiscal year 2024. Linton currently makes nearly four times more than the average professor. Associate professors earn an average of $99,445 per year, assistant professors earn an average of $86,662 per year, and instructors earn an average of $64,741 per year.

“As an employer of choice in the state and in the higher education space, it is crucial that K-State offers competitive compensation to retain and recruit a top-notch workforce,” K-State News and Communications Services Director Michelle Geering said in a written statement. “It is too early in the fiscal year to speculate on any salary increases.”

Wichita State University President Richard Muma’s salary will increase from $500,000 to $520,000 between 2024 and 2025.

Muma became the university’s 15th president in 2021 after serving as interim on two separate occasions. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physician assistant studies from the University of Texas-Galveston School of Medicine, a master’s degree in public health in community health from the University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston and a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Wichita State professors are expected to make an average of $114,038 per year in fiscal year 2024. Currently, Muma makes nearly four and a half times more than the average professor. Associate professors make an average of $83,810 per year, assistant professors make an average of $79,319 per year, and instructors make an average of $51,362 per year.

Lainie Mazzullo-Hart, Wichita State’s communications director, said faculty pay increases have not yet been budgeted and cannot be estimated.

Mason became president of the university in 2017 after serving as president of Valley City State University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and anthropology from Transylvania University, a master’s degree in education from Eastern Illinois University and a doctorate in higher education from the College of William and Mary.

Fort Hays professors are earning an average of $92,175 per year for fiscal year 2024. Mason currently earns nearly three and a half times more than the average professor. Associate professors earn an average of $77,182 per year, assistant professors earn an average of $65,917 per year, and instructors earn an average of $54,868 per year.

“The university constantly reviews employee compensation, with annual adjustments dependent on several factors, including state funding and other revenue and budget considerations,” Fort Hays communications officer Scott Cason said in a written statement.

Cason said faculty will receive a 1.2 percent merit-based raise for fiscal year 2025.
