Although summer still has its roots in Arizona, fall is slowly approaching.

The leaves do not begin to change color until October, with some areas peaking early in the month and others seeing the most vibrant colors later in the month and in early November.

Here’s where you can see fall leaves in Arizona:

  • Flagpole: There’s no denying that Flagstaff is a popular spot for leaf peeping. Some of the best leaf viewing spots in the city include the Aspen Nature Loop, Kachina Trail, or the Inner Basin Trail.
  • White Mountains:Drive State Route 260 between Pinetop-Lakeside and Eagar for beautiful scenery. Along the route, there are several lakes or stops to admire the views. Big Lake is also a popular spot to watch the leaves change color.
  • Mogollon Rim:Drive Forest Road 300, also called Rim Road, between SR 260 and SR 87 or hike See Canyon Trail for a closer look at fall colors.
  • Sedona: For the best leaf viewing in Sedona, take State Route 89A through Oak Creek Canyon. The West Fork Trail along Oak Creek allows hikers to get up close to the leaves, which are beautifully juxtaposed against the canyon walls.
  • Boyce Thompson Arboretum: At the arboretum near Superior, leaves typically change from late October to mid-November.
