Franklin County Designates September as Hunger Action Month

Franklin County has officially designated September as Hunger Action Month, with the goal of highlighting and alleviating food insecurity among its residents. This initiative aligns with the national campaign to address hunger challenges affecting communities across the United States.

Recent data from Feeding America reveals that approximately 1.5 million Americans are food insecure, lacking reliable access to sufficient food. In Franklin County alone, one in nine residents and one in six children are food insecure, highlighting the urgency of the problem.

Over the past year, from July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and its partner networks have distributed more than 3.2 million pounds of food across the region. This effort spans food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and other community programs, including Franklin County MilitaryShare. Launched in May 2022, this program specifically supports veterans and military families, providing free, nutritious food to more than 1,200 residents monthly.

Franklin County Commission Chairman Dean Horst noted the exacerbated impact of rising food prices on American families, increasing their reliance on charitable food programs. “The rising cost of food has limited the ability of many Americans to purchase enough food, increasing the demand for charitable programs. We are grateful for organizations like the Food Bank of Central Pennsylvania that provide essential support to our community,” Horst said.

Commissioners hope that by recognizing Hunger Action Month, they will enhance community involvement and support for food banks and related food assistance programs. They encourage Franklin County residents to contribute through volunteering, advocacy and donations.

For those interested in supporting or in need of assistance, details about local resources, including food pantries and soup kitchens, are available online at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank website.
