Ogle, Carroll Co. students learn agricultural science

(WIFR) – The University of Illinois Extension in Ogle County is educating students about agricultural sciences during Agricultural Awareness Days, Sept. 5 and 6.

On Thursday, 130 students from Ogle and Carroll County gathered at the Ogle County Fairgrounds, 1440 N Limekiln Road, to learn how agriculture impacts their daily lives.

“When kids do hands-on things, they get excited,” said Melinda Colbert, agriculture classroom coordinator for the University of Illinois Extension. “We want to get them excited. There are fewer and fewer kids growing up on farms, and it’s so important that we have people interested in pursuing agricultural careers.”

During the day, students participated in insect identification, soil analysis, sheep shearing, GPS waypoint tracking, daily animal care, bee watching, studying the operating systems of a combine harvester, and the life of a veterinarian.
