Today in Delaware County History, September 6

100 years ago, 1924: The turtle-shaped traffic signal the city recently installed at Ninth and Sproul streets has yielded plenty of results, prompting police department officials to select sites for five more. Today, city electrician Wiegand is putting one up at 20th and Chestnut streets. The others will be installed at Fourth and Highland Avenues, Fourth and Engle Streets, Ninth and Central Avenues, and 24th and Madison Streets.

75 years ago, 1949: Charm Rucker, 1204 E. Ninth St., will be delighted for a long time with his catch off Cape Charles, Va., last Saturday. He caught a rare triggerfish, a species rarely seen outside tropical waters. Rucker is more delighted with that fish than with the heavy weight he and his companions brought over the sides of the boat.

50 years ago, 1974: As children in kindergarten through 12th grade schools enjoy an extended summer break due to the ongoing teachers strike, a group of students in the Chester Upland School District is anything but happy to be out of the classroom. The disgruntled students are licensed practical nursing apprentices in the Chester Upland School District program, the only tuition-free program for practical nurses in Delaware County. Members of the senior class, 24 students ranging in age from 18 to 45, are nearing the end of their year-long training period that is scheduled to end in 12 days.

25 years ago, 1999: The Times newspaper The writers, photographers and editors have won 30 awards in four journalism contests, including 12 first places, for work completed in 1998. Staff writers Patti Mengers and Catherine Donaldson-Evans won first place in the public service investigative reporting category at the statewide Keystone Press Awards sponsored by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association for their seven-part series on nursing homes. The same series, edited by former City Editor Bonnie Healy, won second place in the Philadelphia Press Association’s business reporting category.

10 years ago, 2014: An Upper Darby woman and her 17-year-old daughter were arrested after allegedly stealing a $700 cellphone that a convenience store manager dropped during a struggle with a robber. Police on Saturday released a surveillance camera photo of the man wanted for the reported assault and robbery shortly before 10 p.m. on Sept. 3. The 35-year-old woman and her daughter were waiting in line at a Long Lane convenience store when the manager emerged from a storeroom and confronted a man for allegedly stealing a bag of M&M’s.
