The 20th anniversary of Hurricane Frances

The 20th anniversary of Hurricane Frances

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) -Today marks 20 years since Hurricane Frances tore through north central Florida, leaving a trail of destruction.

The storm made landfall on September 5, 2004, on the east coast of Florida.

As the storm moved inland, it spawned numerous destructive tornadoes across the state.

This came just three weeks after Hurricane Charley, a Category 4 hurricane that already caused significant damage in central Florida.

On the same day that Frances hit the country, Hurricane Ivan formed in the Atlantic and made landfall near the northern border.

Twenty days after Hurricane Frances, Hurricane Jeanne hit the state with more than seven inches of rain, causing widespread flooding.

Today we remember all those affected and how resilient North Central Florida is.
