The Michigan and Ohio State hockey programs are taking their rivalry overseas…again.

The Wolverines and Buckeyes will meet at Wrigley Field on Jan. 3 as part of “The Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey Series,” the conference announced Thursday.

The Michigan-OSU matchup is one of four Big Ten matchups that will be played in conjunction with the annual Winter Classic, scheduled for Dec. 31 between the Chicago Blackhawks and the St. Louis Blues.

Penn State will face Notre Dame on Jan. 3, while Michigan State and Wisconsin will play on Jan. 4. The OSU women’s team will also face Wisconsin on the same day. Minnesota is the only Big Ten men’s team not participating in the event.

Michigan is no stranger to playing outdoors. It has played 10 outdoor games, more than any other college program. It last faced OSU in February 2023 at Cleveland Browns Stadium, where it lost 4-2.

The Wolverines skated to a 4-1 victory in their other outdoor matchup against the Buckeyes at Progressive Field in Cleveland in 2012. Michigan has also played in arguably the two highest-profile outdoor college games in history, beginning with the “Cold War” at Spartans Stadium in 2001. It was the first outdoor game of the modern era and pitted two top-five teams and in-state rivals against each other.

The Wolverines and Spartans met again at Michigan Stadium in 2010, setting a hockey attendance record of over 100,000 fans.

Michigan, which went 23-15-1 last season, is coming off a fourth-place finish in the Big Ten and its third straight Frozen Four appearance, losing to No. 1 Boston College in a national semifinal.

It lost four of its top six scorers and its starting goaltender from 2023-24 but welcomes five transfer additions and seven freshmen in 2024-25, highlighted by 2024 first-round pick Michael Hage, a centre who was selected 21st overall by the Montreal Canadiens.

OSU finished in last place last season and went 0-3-1 against the Wolverines.
