Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper leaves practice field early after suffering injury vs. Vikings

BEREA, Ohio — Cleveland Browns Pro Bowl wide receiver Amari Cooper left Thursday’s joint practice against the Minnesota Vikings early because of an unspecified injury.

Coach Kevin Stefanski would only say “sore” when asked about Cooper’s injury after practice.

Cooper caught a short pass from Deshaun Watson and was heard yelling after it landed and cut through the turf. Cooper remained on the field for several more plays before walking into the facility accompanied by a trainer.

Cooper, 30, caught 72 passes for 1,250 yards last season with the Browns, who restructured his contract at the start of training camp. Cooper is one of Cleveland’s top players and leaders.

Cooper has 150 receptions for 2,410 yards and 14 TDs in his two seasons with the Browns.

Defensive tackle Maurice Hurst also left practice with an apparent leg injury. Stefanski had no update on his status.

Rookie Mike Hall Jr. was not wearing any protection Thursday after suffering a bite during one of Wednesday’s 11-on-11 drills.

Hall, a second-round draft pick out of Ohio State, was arrested Tuesday and charged with domestic violence after he allegedly held a gun to his fiancée’s head during an argument.

The Browns were criticized for allowing Hall to participate in practice. He is due back in court on Sept. 10.

Stefanski responded “potentially” when asked if the injury could keep Hall out for a while.

NOTES: Cornerback Denzel Ward remains in the concussion protocol. … Stefanski said he will rest his starters in Saturday’s exhibition game against the Vikings. … Backup quarterback Jameis Winston also will sit out. … Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who had an impressive performance in last week’s preseason opener against Green Bay, will start and Tyler Huntley will finish.
