MDHHS meal program grows to include 100 restaurants in 26 counties

MICHIGAN (NEPORARY MEXICO) – The Restaurant Meals Program, which provides restaurant meals to eligible seniors and food assistance recipients, has grown to more than 100 restaurants in 26 counties.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) launched the program on January 1, 2021, to assist Michigan residents who face difficulties preparing their own food due to their age or disability, or because they may not have access to a kitchen.

Those who are part of the Restaurant Meals Program can purchase meals at participating restaurants with their Bridge card. MDHHS said the process is similar to purchasing groceries.

Anyone interested in the program must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Adults aged 60 years or older
  • People who receive disability or blindness payments
  • Individuals who receive disability retirement benefits from a government agency due to a disability that is considered permanent
  • Homeless people and their spouses

MDHHS said that under Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) requirements, all members of the group must be eligible to participate in the Restaurant Meals Program.

To participate, restaurants must enroll in the program and receive approval from FNS’ federal partners before eligible participants can make purchases. Interested restaurants can contact MDHHS at [email protected] to enroll.
