Speed cameras in road construction zones are now active in Indiana – Indiana Public Radio

Speed cameras in highway work zones are active for the first time in Indiana.

The Indiana Department of Transportation on Wednesday began its limited pilot program with cameras in a single construction zone.

Lawmakers authorized the speed camera pilot project in 2023. Currently, the law limits cameras to just four highway construction zones statewide.

INDOT is beginning to install cameras in a work zone on Interstate 70 just east of Indianapolis. The agency plans to announce more sites later this year.

The cameras take a photo of the rear of any vehicle traveling at least 11 miles per hour over the limit when workers are present. The vehicle owner receives a warning or a fine in the mail.

The first violation is a warning. The next violation is a $75 fine, and thereafter, $150 fines for each violation.

INDOT is using what it calls a “pre-enforcement period” for the first speed camera zone: Drivers caught exceeding speed limits will only receive warnings for at least the first 30 days the cameras are active.
