North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro Ranked No. 1 in Nationwide Contest

The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro took first place in Newsweek’s Readers’ Choice Awards for “Best Zoo” in the United States.

The venerable Asheboro facility was nominated for the award last month, and voting was open daily for most of July.

The contest nominees were reviewed by a panel of travel writers and tourism experts before a final selection by Newsweek editors.

The Memphis Zoo in Tennessee finished second, followed by the San Antonio and Chicago zoos.

The North Carolina Zoo turned 50 earlier this year and is considered one of the largest natural habitats for animals in the world.

The award also marks the second time in six months that the zoo has been recognized in a nationwide competition.

“We are honored to receive recognition as ‘Best Zoo’ during our golden anniversary year, as we reflect on our past and look toward the future,” said Executive Director Patricia Simmons. “The North Carolina Zoo set out more than 50 years ago to create a zoo unlike any other, and we are deeply humbled by the outpouring of love and support during this contest period and beyond.”
