Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith pleased with Spartans’ progress

Michigan State has continued to hold productive practices as the season quickly approaches.

After an offseason filled with the difficult task of rebuilding the team’s roster, head coach Jonathan Smith had a chance to assess the team’s situation after recently holding a team scrimmage.

Michigan State is still weeks away from kicking off its season at home. However, the team’s scrimmage allowed players and coaches to better understand how things might play out going forward.

Smith said Monday that while the Spartans certainly have a long way to go, he liked what he saw from the team during the scrimmage.

“I was pleased with the amount of work we did,” Smith said of the team’s scrimmage. “Over 100 live scrimmage plays. We had all four phases on special teams, quality reps there. And when I say quality, we’re learning about where we’re at. It wasn’t perfect by any stretch, but it was a really good job of recognizing where we’re at after, at that point, 11 practices.”

Michigan State is in the midst of another week of fall camp and looks to continue improving. Smith understands that football is a game of endurance. He believes it’s a crucial week for the team’s development.

“This week is going to be very important. We’re going to have a scrimmage again,” Smith said. “The plan is next Saturday, so we have to keep pushing. Getting to that point in camp where bodies aren’t feeling great, a lot of plays, a lot of installations, we have to keep pushing and be in a constant state of improvement.”

Michigan State is at a vital point in its first offseason under Smith. The team will have a new coaching staff and plenty of new faces at critical positions. Fall camp offers the Spartans the best chance to properly prepare for the upcoming season, as their schedule is one of the toughest in the Big Ten.

While Michigan State has a slim chance of making a bowl game this upcoming season, it will largely depend on the work they put in in fall training camp. Anything is possible if Smith can develop enough before the season starts.
