Gators DL Jamari Lyons ruled out for the season after suffering a broken ankle

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – After initial reports from the Florida Gators’ first scrimmage suggested that sophomore defensive lineman Jamari Lyons had suffered a significant lower-body injury, head coach Billy Napier confirmed the severity of the situation at his Monday press conference.

Napier announced that Lyons will be sidelined for the entire 2024 season due to a broken ankle.

“Jamari is one of our best players. He really cares about the team,” Napier said. “It was inspiring to see the whole team come together, something I’ve never witnessed in my coaching career.”

In the 2023 season, Lyons recorded 20 total tackles (10 solo) and 2.5 tackles for loss in the 12 games, acting as a backup behind Cam Jackson alongside Desmond Watson.

With Lyons out, the Gators will rely on Watson, rookie Michai Boireau and JUCO transfer Tarvorise Brown to provide depth behind Jackson at nose tackle. Lyons also had the versatility to play the three-technique defensive tackle position, known as “end,” where Caleb Banks, Joey Slackman and Kelby Collins will now contribute.

“This is an area where we have some depth,” Napier said. “There will be some adjustments as we change roles. Jamari’s ability to play both power forward and power forward will require us to adapt.”
