Aces’ Plum and Wilson call Mercury’s Copper ‘unfit for duty’ after Olympic gold medal win

The Mercury star’s Olympic teammates Kahleah Copper, Kelsey Plum and A’ja Wilson had some choice words for her after Sunday’s gold medal win at the Olympics, but all is well.

It starts with a “b,” but it doesn’t stand for “buckets,” although Copper makes plenty of those when putting Team USA or the Phoenix Mercury (13-12) on his back to win games in clutch moments.

After Team USA beat France, 67-66, in the final seconds to clinch the gold medal on Sunday, Plum posted a photo on social media of Copper sleeping during the team’s plane ride home to the United States on Monday.

“That BISSSH tired lol,” Plum wrote with a two-finger peace sign emoji before the additional word “Paris” in the caption.

Copper reposted the photo with her own cheerful caption: “Count your days, Plum.”

Copper and Plum matched their numbers by scoring 12 points against France in Team USA’s gold medal game on Sunday, with two and four assists, respectively. Wilson had a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds.

Copper scored 10 of her points between the third and fourth quarters, helping the Americans rally from a 10-point deficit early in the third quarter, their largest deficit of the tournament. She grabbed four of her five defensive rebounds, added two steals and sealed the win with two free throws made with five seconds left.

In his postgame interview with NBC, Wilson was asked how he would describe Copper’s second-half takeover.

“That bitch!” Wilson replied as he walked away with a whimsical smile. It was all a joke, though NBC may have been taken by surprise.

Copper apparently has more public conversations with Plum than his Las Vegas Aces teammate Wilson.

During Team USA’s All-Star weekend press conference on July 19, Plum comically sparked the media firestorm surrounding Copper: “Can anyone defend you? Let me know, we’re trying to figure it out.”

Copper simply laughed and replied, “Hi, Kelsey.”

Copper is the Mercury’s leading scorer and second in the WNBA at 23.2 points per game. Her eight 30-plus point games are the most in the league this season.

Phoenix will finish its four-game season series against two-time defending champion Las Vegas (16-8) at home on Sept. 1, where Las Vegas leads 2-1. Copper’s season-high 37 points came in the Mercury’s 98-88 win over the Aces on May 21. The Mercury will resume play Thursday at the Chicago Sky.
