The new Hubbard High School is ready to welcome students

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – As part of the $89 million 2022 voter-approved bond, a new Hubbard Middle School was built and the old building was demolished.

“I’m excited to move from… we call it the classic Hubbard, not the old Hubbard… to the new one,” said director John Smiley.

The new building has a capacity of 1,200 students and is three stories high – a proactive expansion to accommodate future growth according to Tyler ISD Superintendent Dr. Marty Crawford.

“With the facilities we have, there is plenty of room to handle any type of growth that might arise over the next 20 to 50 years,” he said.

The old building served thousands of East Texas students and stood for nearly sixty years. Some teachers have installed bricks from the old building in their new classrooms as a way to ease the bittersweet transition.

Teacher Candace Veatch has one of those bricks on a windowsill. She said, “The legacy of anything is in the people, not just in the walls, so we’re going to continue the Hubbard traditions, we’re going to continue the Hubbard pride that we have.”

Some students observed the construction from the “classic Hubbard”.

“It was cool to see the new building being built and to know that one day I will be in that building,” said Cooper Stanley, a seventh-grader.

As for teachers and administration, Smiley said they feel energized and ready to go after the anticipation that built over the summer.

“We’re excited to start clubs and organizations and sports and visual and performing arts and all those things, and we’re really ready to have kids in the building,” she said.

The Tyler ISD school year begins on Wednesday, August 14.
