Michigan gas prices down 10 cents since last week, AAA says

Michigan gas prices are down 10 cents compared to last week, according to AAA’s Monday gasoline report, continuing a decline in prices from last year.

At $3.58 a gallon for regular unleaded, Michigan drivers are paying on average 10 cents less than a week ago, 5 cents less than last month and 25 cents less than this time in 2023, AAA officials said.

This means that filling up the average 15-gallon tank of fuel costs $54, about $4 less than a year ago.

“Michigan drivers are seeing lower prices at the pump,” said Gary Bubar, spokesman for AAA-The Auto Club Group. “Lower gasoline demand amid higher oil costs may lead to prices at the pump remaining flat or slowly increasing.”

On average, the most expensive gas prices in Michigan were in Ann Arbor at $3.68; Jackson at $3.64; and Detroit at $3.63. The cheapest were in Flint at $3.46; Marquette at $3.48; and Saginaw at $3.53.

The cheapest gasoline in the Detroit metro area was priced at $3.09 per gallon, according to GasBuddy price reports Monday morning.

Average unleaded gasoline prices in metro Detroit were $3.63 on Saturday, $3.69 last week and $3.81 a year ago. The lowest price last year was $2.94 and the highest was $3.88. The record price was $5.31, a price reached in June 2022.

The price of a barrel of crude oil rose $2.03 to $75.23 on Wednesday, AAA reported, citing reports from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Crude oil inventories decreased by 3.7 million barrels from the previous week. U.S. crude oil inventories are about 6% below the five-year average for this time of year, at 429.3 million barrels.
