Texas police officer struck by vehicle at scene of crash between truck and burning trailer

A Texas police officer died Monday after being struck by a vehicle while at the scene of an earlier accident.

Fort Worth police had responded to a tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 35W that had caught fire and spilled fuel onto the road, KTVT-TV reports. As crews worked to clean up the spill about three hours later, Sergeant Billy Randolph was standing outside his patrol car when another vehicle drove by and struck him, according to a department news release.

Randolph was rushed to hospital, where he died from his injuries.

“The Fort Worth Police Department asks everyone to keep Sergeant Randolph’s family and friends in their prayers, along with our Fort Worth Police Department family,” the department said.

It is unclear whether the driver of the vehicle faces charges for the incident. Both accidents are under investigation.
