Producer criticises Joaquin Phoenix for his last-minute exit from the film: "It was a nightmare"

The Oscar-winning actor has been keeping himself busy over the past few years, and most recently, he was set to team up with director Todd Haynes for a new film. However, those plans were reportedly thrown into disarray by Phoenix himself, as he reportedly left the production just days before filming was set to begin. One of the film’s producers has since spoken out and corroborated some of the claims, also stating that the unexpected situation “has been a nightmare.”

It was reportedly the actor himself who pitched the idea to Haynes and they began developing it from there. The film was set to begin shooting in Guadalajara, Mexico just five days before the movie. His The lead actor has opted to leave the project. At the time of writing, no clear answer has been revealed regarding the star’s decision to leave the project. Some time after the news went viral, Christine Vachon, who was set to produce the film under the production label Killer Films, reacted to the reports via a Facebook post (which she later deleted). She began her message with the following statement:

It was explained by The Hollywood Reporter that Joaquin Phoenix’s role would not be replaced, and the reason for that is also unclear. Exact plot details for the film are scarce, but it was apparently set to take place in the 1930s and would focus on two lovers. Danny Ramirez, of Captain America: Brave New World and Top Gun: Maverick Fame — was set to co-star. While speaking on FB (via THR), Christine Vachon also referenced the ongoing debate over whether only gay actors can play gay characters. (Both Phoenix and Ramirez are straight.) With that, Vachon asked that people not chastise her or her collaborators on that front:

If you’re tempted to point fingers at us or admonish us by saying “that’s what you get for hiring a straight actor,” DON’T DO IT. This was HIS project that brought us here, and Killer’s track record when it comes to working with LGBTQ casts, crews, and directors speaks for itself. (And for those of you who HAVE, know that you’re making a terrible situation worse.)

Earlier this year, Joaquin Phoenix filmed Eddingtona black comedy western film that reunited him with Beau is scared director Ari Aster. An official release date for that film has not yet been announced. Todd Phillips’ upcoming DC film is the sequel to the 2019 film that earned Phoenix his first Academy Award. And as things stand, the sequel is one of the most anticipated titles on the 2024 film calendar.

Christine Vachon’s comments, as well as the reports that preceded them, seem to indicate that Todd Haynes’ romantic film is over for good. It remains to be seen whether more details will be revealed in the coming months. And, more specifically, it is also not certain whether Joaquin Phoenix’s team will make any kind of statement on the matter.
