3 defensive players to watch in Titans’ preseason opener against 49ers

Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson will officially debut his new defense against the San Francisco 49ers in the team’s preseason opener on Saturday night. Head coach Brian Callahan has consistently confirmed that the starters will play a lot during the preseason.

That means Wilson will get a chance to show off some of his defensive tendencies, even if a “normal” approach is taken. Regardless of how many defensive starters play and how much of Wilson’s scheme is “protected,” there are several talents worth keeping a close eye on.

We’ve identified three Titans on defense that you should especially monitor against the 49ers.

No Titans player has caused more controversy this summer than rookie second-round draft pick T’Vondre Sweat. Sweat was sidelined for most of the offseason’s workout program, leading to overreactions and false narratives. But the former Texas Longhorn has been healthy and has impressed in every training camp practice so far.

Sweat is expected to make his official debut with the Titans against the 49ers. General manager Ran Carthon selected him to pressure and collapse opposing positions. Jeffery Simmons may not play Saturday, but Sweat can show what kind of running mate he will be for Tennessee’s superstar defensive tackle.
