On Wednesday, July 31, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced the recent completion of two transactions totaling $1.5 million to fund energy-efficient and climate-resilient upgrades for affordable housing in Illinois under the Green and Resilient Renovation Program (GRRP). The renovations will update existing common spaces, including replacing roofs, windows, doors, and lighting for very low-income seniors. The renovations will also include upgrades to mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems, electrification, insulation, renewable energy integration, and stormwater management. The first project is a $750,000 loan to the Brainerd Senior Center, a six-story, 60-unit building in Chicago, Illinois. The second is a $750,000 grant to Round Barn Manor, a two-story, 156-unit building in Champaign, Illinois. These transactions are the first to use GRRP funds for construction projects in Illinois. Built in 2000, the Brainerd Senior Center will modernize the 60 existing units and common spaces, including replacing roofs, windows, insulation, doors, lighting, electrification upgrades, and more. HUD is providing rental assistance under the Section 811 Project Rental Assistance program to 12 of the homes on the property. The project also participates in the City of Chicago’s Decarbonization program, which allows for the upgrade of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and the replacement of appliances with electric, energy-efficient alternatives.
