Michigan crops rise amid disease concerns

Michigan crops are advancing faster than last year and the five-year average as disease pressure intensifies.

The USDA says the corn is rated 61 percent good to excellent, with 81 percent of the crop at silk stage and 22 percent at dough stage.

Soybeans are 89 percent flowering pods and 52 percent forming pods, and 60 percent of the crop is good to excellent.

In Michigan, 96 percent of winter wheat is harvested. 79 percent of sugar beets are rated good to excellent.

The dried beans are 87 percent flowering, 44 percent forming pods and 35 percent grading good to excellent.

The second cutting of alfalfa is 87 percent complete and the third cutting is 39 percent complete.

Early season apples, peaches and blueberries are being harvested and growers are reporting some disease-related problems. Disease pressure is also high in vegetable crops.
