Joe Gibbs Racing has announced a leadership change at the No. 20 Toyota team following the recent injury to crew chief Adam Stevens. Former team boss Chris Sherwood will take over as interim crew chief while Stevens recovers from surgery following a double knee injury sustained on a family holiday.

The medical procedure, which was intended to repair both of Stevens’ knees, was a success, and while he recovers, he plans to oversee his team’s operations remotely from race headquarters. This arrangement will be important for the team, as the No. 20 car currently sits eighth in points with a record that includes three wins and multiple first-place finishes this season.

Adam Stevens gave an update on his surgery:

“I’m sorry I won’t be able to be on track for a few weeks, but I will be fully engaged remotely. I’m very grateful for the depth and strength of this squad of 20 and I don’t anticipate my physical absence having any effect on our performance. The surgery went well and I’ll be back on track in a few weeks.”

Bell shared his thoughts:

“Richmond will be a little different this time around as optional tyres will be introduced in the points races. No one is quite sure how it will go, but I’m sure we’ll learn a lot in our practice session on Saturday.”
