North Carolina team continues to dominate Little League Softball World Series

GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) – The fight for the championship title at the Little League Softball World Series continued Monday in Greenville, with the North Carolina Region team well in the running after their performance.

It was the World Series game that had hundreds of fans on their feet at Stallings Stadium cheering as the North Carolina Regional team took on Europe-Africa.

“Everyone is excited and thrilled to be here and the games are usually really good,” said Cayden Davis, one of the attendees.

The energy of the crowd could be felt on the field, something outfielder Emery Peebles said she was grateful for.

“It’s exciting because you know they’ll always be here for you and support you every day,” Peebles said.

On Monday, North Carolina got off to an early start, scoring three runs in the first inning. Their pace only picked up from there, adding eight more runs in the second inning.

Stepping up to the plate, pitcher and third baseman Brooklyn Medhus said she tries not to get into her own thoughts.

“I just try to do what I can,” Medhus said. “I know the people behind me can do well too, so that takes a little bit of pressure off and I just go out there and try to do the best I can.”

North Carolina took the win in the bottom of the fourth inning, 16-0.

Getting the win was a special moment, but head coach Brad Medhus said some things are even more special.

“Everyone in the lineup contributes,” Medhus said. “Probably the most important thing for me is seeing the success from first to 12th place. As a coach, you really enjoy those moments.”

As the young athletes prepare for their next game, Coach Medhus said he hopes the fans will also be ready to step up as they play an important role during the tournament.

“Every time we come out here there’s a big crowd, a lot of noise, the excitement that comes when we get momentum, you can feel it, it’s palpable on the pitch and we definitely feed off of that, the girls feed off of that,” Medhus said. “It’s really hard to measure how much it means to us and we’re very fortunate.”

North Carolina will now have two days off before facing New England Regional on Aug. 8 at 1 p.m.
