Los Angeles Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman receives an incredible standing ovation in his return to the league

Playing in his first game since July 25, Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman received an incredible standing ovation when he walked to the plate Monday night.

In the game against the Philadelphia Phillies, Freeman received a standing ovation that lasted just a minute. He has been out of the lineup for the past few games due to the health of his son, Max, who has been in the hospital with a rare illness. He is now on the mend, but Freeman says the past few days have been very scary and emotional.

The following comes from ESPN:

Max was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves, causing weakness, numbness and, in Max’s case, paralysis.

Max woke up two Mondays ago with a slight limp and five days later was completely paralyzed, prompting Freeman to rush home after a series in Houston. The following Wednesday, July 31, doctors took Max off the ventilator.

You can watch Freeman’s reception below:

The best news of all is that Max is well enough for Freeman to return to the lineup. Also, kudos to Dodgers fans for showing their support, and kudos to Phillies players for recognizing the moment as well, especially pitcher Aaron Nola. Finally, kudos to the umpires for allowing the moment to happen, rather than rushing the game to speed it up.

Freeman, who was named an All-Star this year, is batting .287 at the time of this writing. He has 16 home runs and 67 RBIs.
