Debby brings flooding concerns to South Carolina

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – Debby will continue to slowly move northward bringing torrential rain, gusty winds, and tornado danger to South Carolina.

· Catastrophic and historic flooding is a concern for South Carolina’s Low Country region.

· Debby remains in the area for the next 3 or 4 days before finally moving north over the weekend.

First Alert Summary

Heavy rain will continue northward tonight, kicking off our series of weather alert days. We have a 100% chance of rain with lows around 70°F tonight.

We have one First day of weather alert for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as Debby stays over the Southeast and brings heavy rain and winds to the region during this time. Rain chances are 100% for Tuesday and winds could gust up to 45 mph. High temperatures are in the 70s. 1 to 3 inches of rain is possible during the day.

Debby is likely to stall near the South Carolina coast, producing rounds of heavy rain and gusty winds on Wednesday and Thursday. In fact, it could strengthen slightly as it moves eastward, a little out to sea.

Friday looks like it will be another rainy day for us as the remaining moisture from Debby slowly moves into North Carolina. By this weekend, the remnants of Debby will be gone, giving us some relief.

Overall, most of South Carolina will receive between 5 and 12 inches of rain from Debby. The greatest impacts from Debby will be in areas closer to the coast. Between 15 and 20 inches of rain cannot be ruled out in parts of the Low Country and Pee Dee.

First day of weather alert (Tuesday): Heavy rain throughout the day. 100% chance of rain. Wind gusts up to 50 MPH.

First day of weather alert (Wednesday): Heavy rain and strong winds will continue throughout the day. The chance of rain is 80%.

First day of weather alert (Thursday): Heavy rain and strong winds. Widespread flash flooding possible. 90% chance of rain.

Friday: 70% chance of persistent showers and breezy winds. High temperatures will be around 80°F.
