With Russell Wilson limited, Steelers prove Justin Fields as more than just a toy player

“You’re changing the language of players, especially a young player, who’s been in a couple of systems already,” Smith said. “So we’re working through all that. But I’ve seen him, he’s really running the offense.

“There’s a lot of things we can do to get the most out of him, and that’s exciting. We ask him to be aggressive sometimes, even in 7-on-7. You have to try that in practice. Nobody wants to see negative plays or him just sitting back. We have to see what he can actually do and what he can see in the pocket and all that. The fact that he’s getting more reps is speeding up that process.”

Fields’ reps likely won’t increase once the season starts. It’s still Wilson’s job. But the silver lining to Wilson’s ailment is that the Steelers will be better prepared to utilize Fields, even if it’s only in special packages.

And if things go wrong at the center, they will have more information available to help them make a possible decision, if necessary.
