Harris says VP hasn’t been decided yet; Trump’s ex-lawyer backs off Arizona ‘fake elector’ probe

Usha Vance, the wife of Trump’s running mate Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), defended her husband when pressed about his resurfaced 2021 comments about “childless cat ladies” leading the country that came under widespread scrutiny last month.

In a taped interview that aired on “Fox and Friends” this morning, Usha Vance said her husband’s “joke” was intended to convey that U.S. policies do not do enough to provide the support families need.

“He made a joke to make a point that he wanted to make that was substantial,” she said. “And sometimes I just wish that people would talk about those things and that we would spend a lot less time going over this or that three-word phrase, because what he was really saying is that it can be very difficult to be a parent in this country, and sometimes our policies are designed in a way that makes it even more difficult.”

“We should be asking ourselves, ‘Why is this so? What is it about our leaders and their way of thinking about the world that sometimes makes things so difficult for parents?’” she added.

Asked what she would say to women who were offended by the “women with cats without children” comment, Usha Vance said her husband would “never ever” want his comments “to hurt someone who is trying to have a family or is struggling with that,” and reiterated that she wants to foster a conversation about how to make life better for families.

“And I also understand that there are a lot of other reasons why people might choose not to have families, and a lot of those reasons are very good ones,” she said. “I think what I would say is let’s try to look at the actual conversation that he’s trying to have and engage in and understand for those of us who have families, for the many of us who want to have families, and for whom it’s really difficult, what can we do to make it better? What can we do to make it easier to live in 2024 and live a very full life that’s not just professional, that also has this kind of rich personal life and community behind it?”

Vance had doubled down on his comment about “childless cat ladies” amid backlash over his 2021 remarks, telling SiriusXM’s “The Megyn Kelly Show” that it was a “sarcastic comment” and blaming the media for “focusing so much on the sarcasm and not the substance of what I actually said.”
