Governor Hochul Announces New York State Police Now Accepting Applications for Testing

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Governor Kathy Hochul announced Thursday that the New York State Police is now accepting applications for the state police entrance exam, with testing set to begin Aug. 15.

According to a release, the recruitment period follows a $66 million investment by the governor to fund additional State Police Academy classes.

“Public safety is my top priority and we will continue to make record investments in law enforcement so that New York State is better prepared to protect New Yorkers,” Hochul said. “By investing $66 million in additional classes at the academy, we hope to increase the number of potential New York State Police troopers serving our great state. I encourage those interested in a rewarding career to apply now.”

Regarding diversity, the State Police will participate in the national 30×30 commitment: a commitment to increase the number of women in police recruiting classes to 30% by 2030.

Minimum requirements needed to register for the exam:

  • Must be a US citizen.
  • Candidates must be at least 20 years old and no more than 34 years old at the time of application.
  • The maximum age may be extended by one year for each year of full-time active military service, up to a maximum of seven years.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required to apply.
  • 60 college credits are required at the time of appointment, 30 for those with qualifying military service or police training.

Salary and benefits:

  • The starting salary for academy members is $59,612.
  • After one year of service, the minimum compensation increases to $98,300.
