New Bedford garage sales are among the worst in the country

New Bedford may serve up tasty seafood, have spectacular ocean views and offer an unparalleled cultural experience, but the city’s garage sales are the worst.

Lawn Love’s article “Deal Hunting: 2024’s Best Cities to Tour Garage Sales” is now live, and the news is bad for local garage sale enthusiasts.

Lawn care specialists have released a list of the top 500 cities with the most garage sales in the country, and New Bedford is near the bottom at No. 486. Even Fall River ranks above New Bedford at No. 484.

The only silver lining is that two other Massachusetts communities are doing worse than New Bedford: Somerville ranks 491st and Lawrence 492nd.

The poll has slightly better news for Quincy (482), Lynn (481), Lowell (480) and Cambridge (479). Boston ranks at 474.

Our friends in Rhode Island also have terrible garage sales. Providence is ranked 475th, while Pawtucket is ranked 470th.

No Massachusetts or Rhode Island communities ranked in the top 300 on Lawn Love’s list. In Massachusetts, Newton ranked No. 327, Springfield No. 435, Worcester No. 448 and Brockton No. 456. Cranston, Rhode Island, finished No. 376, while Warwick ranked No. 436.

The top 10 cities in the country for quality garage sales are Los Angeles, San Antonio, Dallas, Chicago, Houston, Fort Worth, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Wichita and Portland, Oregon.

Lawn Love says, “We compared the 500 largest cities based on four categories. More specifically, we looked at the number of garage sales and estate sales, yard size, and the proportion of homes with garages, among ten metrics in total.”
