North Carolina Weather | Heat wave continues in central North Carolina; risk of severe storms this weekend

NORTH CAROLINA (WTVD) — The heat wave continues.

There is a heat advisory in effect Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Actual temperatures are expected to reach 110 degrees.

The day will also bring the threat of overnight showers and thunderstorms have the possibility of becoming severe with damaging winds.

This comes after dangerously intense heat on Thursday, with wind chills as high as 107 degrees.

Heat Safety

Cooling centers are available, as experts say it is important to stay indoors as much as possible in this type of weather.

On days like this:

  • Adults over the age of 65 or those with existing medical conditions and children under the age of four are at higher risk for heat-related illness.
  • Familiarize yourself with the symptoms of heat-related illnesses, such as heavy sweating, cool, pale, clammy skin, and a rapid, weak pulse.
  • Use the buddy system: Check on your neighbor who may be at high risk and make sure they have access to air conditioning and water.

It is also important to never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.

Looking to the future

Saturday will be partly cloudy with scattered afternoon thunderstorms and possibly damaging winds, with highs between 90 and 95 degrees.

Sunday will see cooler temperatures in the mid-80s, but there is still a chance of showers.
