Beryl’s remnants spawned four tornadoes in Indiana, including an EF-3: NWS

MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (AP) — The remnants of Hurricane Beryl spawned at least four tornadoes in Indiana, including an EF-3 twister with winds of up to 140 mph that leveled a small town in the state’s southwestern corner, the National Weather Service said.

The tornado that struck Mount Vernon and other parts of Posey County grew to about 300 yards (274 meters) wide Tuesday night and left a path of damage nearly 6 miles (9.7 kilometers) long, collapsing much of a warehouse, derailing train cars, damaging mobile homes and ripping roofs off homes.

The storm began just north of the Ohio River, the weather service office in Paducah, Kentucky, said on Facebook after conducting damage surveys along the storm tracks Tuesday.

No injuries were reported from the EF-3 tornado or three other twisters that tore through southwest Indiana on Tuesday as the remnants of Beryl moved toward Canada and the northeastern United States after leaving millions without power in the Houston area.

The weather service said an EF-2 tornado with winds of up to 120 mph (193 kph) cut a path 8.4 miles (1.5 kilometers) long that began near the town of Poseyville in Gibson County and flattened corn fields before damaging farm buildings.

Two EF-1 tornadoes with winds up to 100 mph (161 km/h) were also confirmed, one of which touched down near the town of Springfield in Posey County, damaging trees. The other tornado touched down in Gibson County on the west side of the town of Patoka, damaging trees, crops and a utility pole.

The weather service said two more EF-1 tornadoes with winds of up to 100 mph touched down Tuesday in Union County, Kentucky, in the far northwest corner of the state. No injuries were reported.
