Natural energy boosters can help you combat the afternoon energy slump

Do you feel sluggish around 3pm every day?

For many, overcoming the afternoon energy slump at work is a challenge.

But Beth Czerwony, a registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic, said there are plenty of ways to naturally boost your energy, including not skipping breakfast.

“If you can spread your calories throughout the day, you’re less likely to have that energy deficit later in the afternoon,” Czerwony said. “For breakfast, you should be eating protein sources, healthy fats and whole grains. A balanced meal will help you get through the day.”

Czerwony stressed that what you eat will affect your energy level throughout the day.

Eating a balanced diet with lean proteins and complex carbohydrates can provide you with energy for a longer period of time, as your body needs more time to digest them.

For example, packing a grilled chicken sandwich on whole wheat bread for lunch is better than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on white bread.

And since we tend to feel more fatigued when we’re dehydrated, it’s important to drink plenty of water.

Czerwony added that finding ways to stay active during the workday can also help.

“Remember to get up, move around, and even go outside for some fresh air if you have the chance. Sometimes taking a moment to disconnect from the computer screen or step away from your workstation can naturally give you an energy boost,” Czerwony said.

When it comes to coffee, Czerwony said it’s fine to have a cup to start your morning, but it’s best to consume caffeine in moderation.

You should also keep in mind that caffeine later in the day can interfere with your sleep.
