‘Cyber incident’ halts marriage, birth and death certificates in Florida

Florida couples don’t need to worry about getting to church on time because a “possible cyber incident” has halted the collection of vital records.

The Florida Department of Health’s online certification system suffered what it called a “potential cyber incident,” Fox 25 Orlando reported, resulting in “temporary outages to the Vital Statistics system.”

The system houses birth, marriage and death certificates.

Terry Wright, owner of Wright & Young Funeral Home, told The Post that he had to go back to “the old way of doing death certificates” — by analog.

“It’s slowing down the process.”

Still, his Miami funeral home doesn’t have a backlog of bodies, he said, because there’s a workaround for burials and inhumations before the final death certificate arrives: getting a doctor’s consent. That’s not the case for cremations, but he said those bodies haven’t been left piled up in a freezer at the crematory, at least for now.

But some families are left in the lurch, unable to obtain insurance reimbursements or access annuities or other financial accounts, Wright said.

“No one wants to proceed with final rights or finances without a final death certificate,” he said.

Wright said the vital statistics issue began on June 27 and the system was still down as of Saturday afternoon.

“As is standard practice, the department is coordinating with law enforcement and all relevant stakeholders,” the Department of Health told Fox 35.

“All affected parties will be notified once a thorough assessment of the situation is completed.”
