An Illinois doctor pleaded guilty Thursday to federal charges of health care fraud for submitting false claims to Medicaid and private insurers.

Dr. Mona Ghosh, 51, of Inverness, Illinois, owned and operated Progressive Women’s Healthcare, SC, an obstetrics and gynecology practice in Hoffman Estates. Prosecutors allege Ghosh participated in a four-year scheme, from 2018 to 2022, to defraud Medicaid, TRICARE and other insurance providers.

According to the indictment, Ghosh billed for procedures and services that were never performed, were medically unnecessary, or were performed without the patient’s consent.

He also allegedly inflated the complexity and length of legitimate visits to maximize reimbursement rates.

Additionally, the plea agreement states that Ghosh fabricated medical records to support these fraudulent claims.

Dr. Ghosh pleaded guilty to two counts of healthcare fraud, each of which carries a possible sentence of ten years in prison. U.S. District Judge Franklin U. Valderrama scheduled sentencing for Oct. 22, 2024.
