Texas left-handed pitcher David Shaw enters NCAA transfer portal

Texas Longhorns senior left-handed pitcher David Shaw entered the NCAA transfer portal on Saturday, he announced on Twitter.

The 6-foot-7, 200-pounder spent one season with Rice out of Houston Kinkaid, posting a 2-2 record in 22 appearances with the Owls in 2022, posting a 6.57 ERA with 28 strikeouts and 20 walks in 37.0 innings. Shaw made his collegiate debut against Texas that February, allowing four earned runs on one hit and three walks with one strikeout in 0.2 innings. When Shaw struggled as a freshman, control issues tended to take center stage.

As a draftee, Shaw was a top-400 prospect nationally whose fastball topped out at 88 mph with sink and run from an arm gap that makes him difficult for left-handed hitters to catch.

With the Longhorns, though, Shaw’s fastball typically hovered around the 80s mph mark (while his delivery was deceptive, it never had the velocity to let hitters down). In 2023, that didn’t matter, as Shaw’s control improved enough since his time at Rice that he became a key piece of the Texas bullpen, leading the team with a .195 batting average against, striking out 30 batters in 32.0 innings and having second-most appearances with 26. Shaw finished the season with a 2-2 record, one save and a 3.09 ERA.

A season-ending elbow injury forced Shaw to undergo offseason Tommy John surgery and he was unable to recapture his 2023 form in his second season in the burnt orange and white jersey, posting a 7.79 ERA in 18 appearances as opponents hit .275 with six home runs against Shaw in 17.1 innings while walking 14 batters.

Freshman infielder Sam Ardoin, freshman right-hander Cole Selvig and freshman second baseman Dee Kennedy also entered the portal after the 2024 season.
