Tropical storm is reported to be fading in Houston

The city is advising residents to stock up on food amid a tropical storm warning in southeastern Harris County that encompasses parts of Houston.

The tropical storm warning applies to areas just south and east of Houston, in addition to hurricane and tropical storm warnings in surrounding counties. Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to make landfall nearly 100 miles southwest of the city, between Corpus Christi and Matagorda Bay, early Monday.

Beryl is likely to bring heavy rain, flooding, winds and possibly tornadoes to the Houston area in the coming days. The worst of the weather is expected to occur Sunday night into Tuesday morning, though officials do not expect to issue evacuation notices for the storm, said City of Houston Office of Emergency Management spokesman Brent Taylor. A map of hurricane evacuation zones is available online.

The statement asked residents to stock up on supplies, including prescription medications, for five to seven days as a precaution and to develop a family communication plan.

Residents are also asked to learn how to turn off their utilities in an emergency, though the statement says they should only turn off gas if asked to do so by local officials or CenterPoint Energy.
