Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark reflects on historic day – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indiana Fever fans inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon witnessed history.

Fever rookie guard Caitlin Clark finished with 19 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds in the Fever’s upset 83-78 win over the New York Liberty.

With her performance, she became the first rookie to record a triple-double in WNBA history.

She also became the first Fever player in franchise history to record a triple-double.

“Obviously, it’s really great,” Clark said. “My teammates have been shooting the ball at a really high rate. My assist numbers are because of them. Just finding them in positions to be successful, whether it’s AB (Aliyah Boston) or Lyss (Nalyssa Smith). I think we’ve done a really good job of that.”

Clark solidified the triple-double with just over seven minutes to play in the fourth quarter, when he grabbed his 10th rebound.

“I think everyone was a little confused as to why they (the fans) were going so crazy over a rebound,” Clark said. “I guess they can do that all the time, but this time it was a little different.”

Clark nearly recorded a triple-double last weekend, when he finished with 15 points, 12 assists and 9 rebounds in Indiana’s 88-82 win over Phoenix.

“First and foremost, she’s the most competitive person I’ve ever met,” said Fever head coach Christie Sides. “I compare her to Diana Taurasi. She’s always looking for ways to get better. How can I help the team?”

Clark has scored in double figures in eight straight games. He’s also had at least 10 assists in each of his last three games. But statistics aren’t what matters to Clark, according to Sides. What matters most to Clark is scoring.

“She just wants to win,” Sides said. “And for me, she’s going to be my Rookie of the Year every day.”

On Wednesday, the Fever return home to face the Washington Mystics. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. ET.
