D-backs’ Ketel Marte out of lineup against Padres, Newman to start

Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte is out of the starting lineup for Saturday’s game against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

Outfielder Randal Grichuk came in as a pinch hitter in place of Marte in the ninth inning, as he left Friday’s game with lower back soreness. Grichuk batted in place of Marte and hit a two-run homer to give the D-backs the lead after they started the inning down by five runs.

D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said after Friday’s game that the All-Star second baseman was day-to-day. Lovullo is hopeful that Marte will be available off the bench late in the game. from azcentral Nick Piecoro reported.

Kevin Newman will start at second base in place of Marte and bat eighth in the order. It will be his fifth start of the season at second base and first base since April 24.

Newman will make his 11th appearance at second base, the second-most at any position for him this season. He did not commit an error in the 10 games.

He has worked all over the infield this season, most often replacing Geraldo Perdomo at shortstop as he recovers from a torn meniscus.

In 62 games, Newman has two home runs, 19 RBIs and 13 extra-base hits. He has a .280 batting average and a .696 OPS.

First pitch for Game 2 between the D-backs and Padres will be at 6:40 p.m. on ArizonaSports.com, the Arizona Sports app and 98.7.
