Phoenix police detectives are investigating to determine if impairment was a factor in Friday night’s crash that left one woman dead and sent five people to hospitals.

The crash happened around 8:35 p.m. July 5 near 5400 East Pinnacle Peak Road and involved two vehicles that were on fire when officers arrived. Firefighters had arrived and were putting out the blaze, according to a Phoenix Police Department statement.

Six occupants were treated and taken to hospital. One of the victims, Juliene Aumani, 53, died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Preliminary information suggests a Fiat driven by a 19-year-old woman was traveling west on Pinnacle Peak Road when she left the roadway and struck some bushes and palo verde trees in the northbound right-of-way, the release said.

The vehicle returned to the roadway and crossed the center line where it collided with a Toyota Corolla that was driven by a 31-year-old woman and occupied by four adult passengers, including Aumani.

All others involved are expected to survive, authorities said.

The investigation continues as detectives try to determine if the crash was disability-related.
