Could the Houston Rockets lose Alperen Sengun sooner than expected?

The Houston Rockets are reportedly making a questionable decision regarding the future of the core of their roster.

Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green have two of the highest ceilings on the Rockets’ lineup, but management is hesitant to pay max contract extensions to either of them. according to Kelly Iko of The Athletic.

“At this stage, Şengün or Green are unlikely to receive rookie max extensions — both are eligible for a five-year deal worth up to $224.2 million, per The Athletic salary cap expert Danny LeRoux,” Iko wrote. “Houston has had conversations with both sides about an extension and will continue the dialogue throughout the offseason, but the chances of either player signing a deal in the realm of fellow 2021 draftees Cade Cunningham ($236 million) or Scottie Barnes (potentially up to $270 million) are slim.”

It seems like everyone on the commentary track is wondering why the Rockets are on the fence about re-signing Sengun after he averaged 21.1 points, 9.3 rebounds and 5 assists on 53.7 percent shooting last season. He finished third in Most Improved Player voting behind guards Tyrese Maxey and Coby White.

On the other hand, it’s understandable that Green is waiting to see how he progresses in his fourth season. The 22-year-old never has trouble scoring at a high rate, but rather, the efficiency and skills around him are the concern. In the second half of last season, he was on a roll, consistently scoring 30-plus points on impressive shooting percentages. Green and Sengun are both under contract for the 2025 season, but will become restricted free agents after that.
