Michigan State’s Tyson Walker signs contract with Suns for Summer League

Tyson Walker didn’t hear his name called last week during the NBA Draft, but the team owned by a fellow Spartan is giving Walker a chance to continue pursuing his dreams of making it into the league.

Walker signed a contract to play for the Phoenix Suns’ Summer League team, the Spartans men’s basketball team announced Sunday afternoon.

Walker is from New York and spent two seasons at Northeastern before transferring to Michigan State ahead of the 2021-22 season. The 6-foot-1 combo guard led the Spartans in scoring the past two seasons. Last season, Walker averaged 18.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.9 steals per game en route to earning second-team All-Big Ten selection for the second consecutive season.

Walker and Malik Hall were the only two Spartans eligible for the 2024 NBA Draft. AJ Hoggard considered turning pro after last season, but ultimately decided to use his final year of college eligibility at Vanderbilt.

Walker and Hall participated in several pre-draft workouts with NBA teams over the past few weeks. Walker’s draft process included stops in Indianapolis and Phoenix, while Hall had visited Portland, Golden State, Phoenix and Oklahoma City, among others.

Hall, who also went undrafted, has not publicly announced what’s next for him. The Summer League begins in Las Vegas on July 12 and runs through July 22.

The Suns have notable ties to the Michigan State men’s basketball program. Spartan alum Mat Ishbia, a former guard and now CEO of United Wholesale Mortgage, purchased the WNBA’s Phoenix Suns and Mercury for $4 billion in December 2022. Ishbia also helped finance the new Tom Izzo Football Building.
