Division III All-American Michael Hilker Jr. commits to Arizona Wildcats baseball

After receiving transfers from a pair of power conference schools and a major mid-major, Arizona’s latest acquisition comes from a little further down the college baseball ladder. But no less accomplished.

The Wildcats have landed a commitment from former Wisconsin-Whitewater right-hander. Michael Hilker Jr.a Division III All-American.

The 6-foot-8 Hilker is coming off an excellent second season in which he helped the Warhawks reach the College World Series Division III championship series, falling in three games to Misericordia. Hilker was Whitewater’s ace, posting a 9-2 record and a 1.96 ERA in 15 games, including 13 starts, striking out 116 batters (against 12 walks) in 87.1 innings with an opponents’ batting average of .187.

Hilker is Arizona’s fourth transfer commitment this offseason, the third pitcher. The Wildcats previously signed the ex-Rutgers right-hander Christian Coppola and former Baylor right-handed pitcher Colin McKinney as well as a right-handed first baseman from Samford (Aaron Walton).

Arizona is expected to have to replace all three starters from the weekend on a team that won both the regular-season and conference tournament titles in the Pac-12. Clark Candioti and cam walty are ineligible as long as they are left-handed Jackson Kent He is likely to be selected in next month’s MLB Draft and sign to begin his professional career.

UA is proving to be an attractive landing spot for pitchers after the first-year pitching coach. Kevin Vane He guided his staff to a 4.46 ERA (more than 1.5 fewer runs than in 2023) and the No. 1 ranking nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.46) and walks allowed per nine innings (2.56).
