Plane crashes near Sydney, New York

A small plane reportedly crashed in Delaware County, New York, on Sunday afternoon.

A single-engine plane from Oneonta, which authorities said had taken off from Albert S. Nader Regional Airport, crashed near Sidney around 2 p.m. The FAA confirmed the incident involving the plane.

The plane is believed to have been carrying five passengers. While the status of the passengers is not yet confirmed, the FAA and NTSB are conducting investigations into the incident.

Details of the crash, including the cause and details of the aircraft and its occupants, are still being reviewed. Unverified accounts suggest the Piper 45 crashed into Lake Cecil at approximately 2 p.m. Sunday.

Eyewitnesses described seeing the plane descend, prompting a response from the Priority One Safety Team, a volunteer emergency group, which launched search operations alongside several fire departments, including Masonville and Trout Creek.

Reports on the Catskill Region Fire/Rescue Incident Page indicate that multiple emergency units have been dispatched to the scene, with pieces of the aircraft located in different areas, including Richardson Hill Road and Lake Cecil Road. Efforts to locate the aircraft continue, and debris is scattered across the landscape.
