SOGGY SUNDAY – WSVN 7News | Miami news, weather, sports

Happy last Sunday in June, South Florida!

We hope everyone had a great weekend. South Florida had a mixed bag of weather this weekend. Fortunately for us, Saturday was mostly dry and many were able to spend as much time outdoors as they wanted. Heat was the big news as a heat advisory was issued once again on Saturday following the one issued on Friday. But while the weekend started off on the dry side, a nearby disturbance brought unsettled weather to South Florida for the latter part of the weekend. Today the rain has been relentless, intense at times with strong thunderstorms, producing plenty of lightning and concerns of flooding for many. It has certainly been a gray day for South Florida as cloud cover has remained thick and widespread across South Florida.

SOGGY SUNDAY – WSVN 7News | Miami news, weather, sports

Tonight, South Florida should begin to see gradual improvement. While many of the showers will taper off and the storms will eventually dissipate, cloud cover will remain for much of the night. Therefore, tonight will be mostly cloudy skies with still a chance for some showers, especially in some of the more southern locations such as the Florida Keys. After all the rain we saw today and the wind picking up the water, it’s sure to be a wet feeling in South Florida overnight. Due to continued rain today, temperatures will remain in the upper 70s for our mainland areas and in the upper 70s to lower 80s for the Florida Keys.

Last but not least, next week looks to start out still wet at times with scattered showers and thunderstorms possible at any time, especially on Monday. As we get closer to the middle of the work week, the tropical moisture we have (and nearby disturbances) will move away while an onshore wind will help bring back a more typical summer pattern for South Florida. This means South Florida can expect some showers early in the day, followed by midday storms that will eventually move inland. The important 4th of July holiday is starting to look promising for South Florida! Drier air will finally start to move in and this will help reduce the chances of rain for much of South Florida during the second half of next work week. With more sunshine, temperatures will start to reach into the mid to upper 90s, so it will feel humid.

One month into hurricane season, the tropics have now come alive! We have a major hurricane (Beryl) approaching the Windward Islands, where gale-force winds and storm surge will begin to be felt early Monday. Beryl is forecast to move into the Eastern Caribbean by Monday night, keeping all Caribbean islands on high alert. While Beryl does not pose a threat to South Florida, the Lesser Antilles, Caribbean islands, Central America, and Mexico should monitor the progress of this system.

Have a good week!
